Havana, Cuba

Pray for the Lord to send out workers to the harvestfield of Havana.

1. Pray for every driver of a VW Bug or a Bicitaxi in Havana to hear the phrase, “Jesus Loves You” sometime this spring, find out what that means, and then believe it.

2. Castillo de la Real Fuerza is the oldest stone fort in the Americas (wikipedia). It was built to protect Havana from pirates, and in English its name means “Castle of the Royal Force.” Spiritually speaking, every Christian should stand as a castle strengthened by the most royal of forces – the King of kings. Pray that believers in Havana will know the good hand of God upon their lives every day, that sin may no more hold dominion.

3. Pray for the providence of God to intervene in the life of a teenager who will stand in one of the pictured doorways above today, pondering the meaning and purpose of his or her existence.

Aura, Finland

Pray for the Lord to send out workers to the harvestfield of Aura.

1. Pray for every person living in a home in this picture to have an opportunity this year to have his heart made whiter than snow.

2. Aura is named after the Aura River, and “aura” is the Finnish word for “plow.” The shape of the area is roughly that of a plow. Pray for any Christians in Aura to find strength/rest in the fact that they are in the yoke with the gentle Master, whose burden is light (Mt. 11:28-30).

3. In the Middle Ages, pilgrimages were often made to the Turku Cathedral, which is a thirty-one minute drive from Aura. Recently, Aura River Pilgrimages have begun again as an advertised way to find a spiritual connection with history and/or nature. Stops along the way range from Iron Age ritual to Catholic to Evangelical Lutheran sites. Pray for a pilgrim to meet Jesus, the only true spiritual connection to the Father’s gifts of forgiveness, purpose, and peace.

Remote Areas of Kyrgyzstan

Pray for the Lord to send out workers to the harvestfield of the remote areas of Kyrgyzstan.

1. On the right side of the picture is a “little house on the prairie.” Several horses are grazing in the field, and the haze of distant mountains is visible in the background. Kyrgyzstan has many remote areas such as this, single dwellings away from any town or village. Pray for the light of the gospel to penetrate even these hard-to-get-to places.

2. Pray for someone working with horses in a remote area to hear about and follow the Horseman Who will one day ride down from the sky on a white horse to reign over all the earth.

3. Pray for distribution of the Kyrgyz Bible to increase, and be received with open hearts.

Our Assignment

Yesterday morning I was sitting on my kitchen floor looking through a stack of cookbooks to find daisy petals. Although I thought I knew which cookbook I had put them in to be pressed and dried six weeks prior, they were not in the expected place, so I was leafing through every book on the shelf to find them. As it turned out, they ended up being in the book I  thought I’d placed them, but another discovery was made during the search, which is worth sharing this morning.

One of the cookbooks was a Christmas gift to my grandparents in 1977. It is an interesting mix of testimonies and recipes from such well-known Christian women as Dale Evans Rogers, Ethel Barrett, and Ruth Bell Graham. Tucked in between the pages was a paper cut from a church bulletin, with a line in my Grandma Ballard’s handwriting:

“This my assignment too.” Those words were penned over forty years ago, yet they reach across the decades to find resonance with every TGP team member, for this is why we each signed up to pray. There is a cause and commission so vital that it stirs the hearts of those who love Jesus to do what they can to make Him known in every place. “From the rising of the sun to the going down of the same the LORD’s name is to be praised.” (Psalm 113:3) Amen, may it ever be.

My grandma never had the opportunity to take an overseas mission trip, yet in more ways then can be elaborated here, her influence for the kingdom of God continues to reach places her feet never traveled. She was the baby girl referenced in last Sunday’s TGP post on Hoyt, Colorado, and, similar to what was spoken of Abel in Hebrews 11:4, she “being dead still speaketh.”

When I read the page above, I immediately thought of you all. Thank you for likewise taking up the mantle of prayer for Jesus to be known to the peoples of the world. I hope that reading both my grandma’s words and the printed poem and paragraph are an encouragement to each of you. Additionally, let us be challenged by the fact that our lives have the potential to encourage others long after we’re gone, as illustrated by the random finding of a paper yesterday morning.

I Corinthians 15:58 – “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, for as much as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”

Salisbury, Australia

Pictured above is the Len Beadell Public Library, whose namesake has been called “the last true Australian explorer.” A surveyor who led a small crew in building 3700+ miles of roads, including the famous Gunbarrel Road across Australia’s desert, he thus provided access to 970,000+ square miles of bush country. His interest in surveying began as a teenager when he join a scout troop whose scoutmaster was a surveyor. He continued surveying for the Australian military in WW2, and stayed with the military afterwards, using his skills to select a site for atomic bomb testing. He later built roads for a decade, using constellations to help determine latitude and longitude in order to make them as straight as a gunbarrel when at all possible. He named these roads after his wife and three children, one of whom quotes their dad as saying, “First you make the roads and then you take your family for trips on them.” * The hardships of extended bush life took their toll on his health, so Len transferred to other work in 1963, continuing to contribute valuable services to his country, and receiving numerous honors.

1.   Pray for each of Len and Anne’s descendants to have a personal relationship with Jesus, Who is the only Road from this world to the Father.

2.   Pray for someone who frequents the above library to find the key to happiness in walking with God.

3.   All of Len’s roads are still usable today, and 4-wheelers enjoy the challenge of traversing them. Pray for one such adventurer to be saved this year.
