Central Park 4: Playmates Arch, NYC

Pray for the Lord to send out workers to the harvestfield of New York City.

Playmates Arch is in the Children’s District of Central Park. It allows pedestrians to continue walking along the footpath uninterrupted by traffic above. To the west of the arch is the carousel, playground, and ballfield. To the east is both the Chess & Checkers House and the dairy.

  1. Jesus said that unless a person becomes like a little child, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. Pray for a caregiver walking with children under Playmates Arch today to have the humble faith of a child, and thus receive eternal life.
  2. Pray for two of this month’s game players at the outdoor Chess & Checkers House to meet Jesus.
  3. Pray for a child who has previously ridden on the carousel who has been through traumatic life events to find salvation, comfort, and healing in the arms of Jesus, Who called the little children to His side.

Central Park 3: The Obelisk, NYC

Pray for the Lord to send out workers to the harvestfield of New York City.

Photo from Google Earth

Located behind the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Obelisk is known as Cleopatra’s Needle, and is one of two needles that flanked the Egyptian temple in Heliopolis (referred to Biblically as On), the center for Egyptian sun worship. What is really interesting is that Moses probably saw The Obelisk on a regular basis, because historians think he received his Egyptian education in Heliopolis, and The Obelisk was there before he was born. Thus, although many of the hieroglyphics have been weathered down over the course of time, we are potentially looking at a picture of something that Moses saw as a teenager / young man.

  1. Hebrews 11:24-26 says that when Moses was come of age, he valued the reproach of Christ as greater riches than all of Egypt’s treasures. Today only scattered fragments of Heliopolis’ grandeur can be found in the desert sands around Cairo. Moses made the right choice. Pray for Christian teenagers touring the Metropolitan Museum of Art this spring to make that same right choice.
  2. Jesus said that if someone would not believe Moses’ writings, they would not believe Him. As an application of that statement, pray for a person struggling with what Moses wrote in Genesis 1-11 to accept its veracity by faith, thus paving the way to accept the Redeemer’s New Testament message of salvation.
  3. Pray for Christian leaders in New York City to continue growing in their personal knowledge of and walk with God, just as Moses’ maturity and understanding of God continued to grow throughout his life.

  1. In 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, Paul compares the Christian life to a race. Pray that Christians passing through Central Park this week will be faithful to run for God all the days of their lives, looking to Jesus for inspiration (Heb. 12:1-3).
  2. Pray for Christians passing through Central Park this week to also consistently exhibit brotherly love toward fellow believers.
  3. Pick one individual from the runners above, and pray for that person’s salvation.

  1. We have entered the north end of Central Park, NYC’s most famous park. The Lord willing, we will walk to the southern end, finishing up the remaining 3.79 miles of our virtual prayer walk this week. Central Park has over 42 million visitors annually. Pray for people who will come to the pictured fork in the road today, that they will make the choice to go God’s way at the spiritual crossroads of life and eternity.
  2. To the right of our map marker is the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center, which lends out fishing equipment for catch and release fishing in the lake. Pray for a girl who will go fishing for the first time there this spring, that she will be saved and serve God as a missionary fisher-of-men.
  3. To the left of our map marker is The Blockhouse, Central Park’s oldest building. It was built to defend New York City in the War of 1812. Things like freedom and home are always worth defending. Paul wrote that the Philippians were partakers with him in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. Just as The Blockhouse is old but still standing, pray that NYC’s oldest decade of Christians – those in their 90s and above – will be faithful defenders of the gospel all the way until their very last breath here on earth.

Sunday Songs Series: “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus”

Revelation 5:11

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

The words are simple, but the conviction behind them is profound. “I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back.” Rather than write the powerful story behind the lyrics here, you can listen to it and the song at today’s link. May the caliber of Nokseng’s faith be ours as well.

  1. Pray for persecuted Christians around the world today to be encouraged by the Savior’s love.
  2. Pray for Christians living in free countries to remember to pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters (Heb. 13:3).
  3. Someone once made the comparison that a Christian’s life is like a million dollars. If he is called to die for Jesus, it’s like he gives God the million dollars all at once. If he lives a long life, it’s like he gives God that same million dollars in daily deposits of nickels and dimes. The important thing is that either way, God receives the believer’s life as an act(s) of worship. No matter how long our lives are here on earth, pray that all believers will be found faithful to Jesus Christ.

  1. The Harlem Renaissance, occurring in the 1920s – 30s, was a time of flourishing artistic and cultural development in NYC’s African-American Harlem neighborhood. During this time, the Harlem Globetrotters first gained popularity. Interestingly, they were based out of Chicago, but named in honor of harlem, New York. Having toured over a hundred countries, they are known worldwide for their unique ball handling and entertainment skills. Pray for a current number of the Harlem Globetrotters to accept Jesus Christ as personal Savior.
  2. The building above illustrates the blending of older brick decor with new windows. Pray for Christians in Harlem to successfully pass the baton of faith from older generations to younger ones (2 Tim. 2:1-2).
  3. Pray for many people from Harlem’s deaf community to see a clear presentation of the gospel in American Sign Language, and turn to Christ alone for salvation.

  1. Notice the red doors on this building with their cast iron ornamentation. They bring to mind Paul’s statement that a great and effective door was opened to him, but there were many adversaries (1 Cor. 16:9). Pray for Christians who regularly walk through these doors to likewise fully walk through the doors God has opened in their lives for advancing His kingdom.
  2. This building is a Baptist church, but looking at their Facebook profile reveals that in some ways they have departed from the Biblical mandates for pastors/preachers. Pray for them to return to God’s plan in all areas.
  3. Pray for a set of parents who go to this church and have recently experienced a miscarriage, that they will daily know God’s comfort and grace.

  1. Pray for the next Christian who uses the pictured bike lane to start or continue memorizing / meditating on Scripture as a lifelong habit.
  2. Notice the raised orange hand signal at the intersection, warning pedestrians not to cross the street. Pray for three Manhattan residents who have flagrantly rejected the gospel, but for whom God is continuing to send warning signals into their lives, that they will heed Him and repent.
  3. Pray for every owner of a bright orange car in New York City to hear the true meaning of Easter, and believe in the Christ celebrated on Resurrection Sunday.

Myanmar Earthquake

Pray for the Lord to send out workers to the harvestfield of Myanmar.

Please use today’s prayer time to pray for the Samaritan s Purse staff who are in the process of taking a field hospital to Myanmar.

  1. Pray for the process of transporting and setting up the field hospital to go smoothly / quickly, and for it to help many, many people.
  2. Pray for Samaritan’s Purse personnel already on the ground in Myanmar and Thailand, for the Lord to meet their needs as they work to help others.
  3. In 2022 alone, Samaritan’s Purse sent 22,000 Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes to Myanmar. OCC boxes include a gospel witness. Pray for everyone affected by the earthquake who has ever received an OCC shoebox to remember that gospel message, and believe.

  1. Pray for the Holy Spirit to continue His convicting work today in the lives of both the owner and chauffeur of this limosine, and for their responses to be obedience to His pull to believe on Jesus.
  2. The Strivers’ Row neighborhood to the right of our map marker was so named a century ago because it symbolized success for those who were able to buy houses there. Pray for a family currently living in Striver’s Row who has a similar concept of earning eternal life, that they will realize the only way to make it to heaven is to accept God’s free gift; personal merit can never earn salvation.
  3. Behind the engine of the limousine is a white cooler holding ice for sale. Pray for the next person who restocks bags of ice there to meet, trust, and love Jesus.
