Christian Parents & Their Children Around the World

Deuteronomy 6:7

(from William Tyndale’s 1526 translation of the Bible into English, available on biblehub.com)

This verse immediately follows the great and first commandment to love the LORD our God with all that we are, and to keep His words in our hearts. It is very interesting that the word translated diligently in verse seven literally means “to whet, sharpen.” (Later on in the chapter, the word diligently appears again, but this time it’s the Hebrew word meaning “to keep, guard.”) This is a powerful word picture! Parents are to take God’s Word, and whet it against their children’s lives by repeated use. This will cause His Word to become sharp in its effectiveness in their lives. Hebrews 4:12 states that God’s Word is indeed a powerful and sharp sword; it is therefore the greatest endeavor of parenting to sharpen our children’s hearts and lives to be receptive to it. His Word can be applied and discussed at any given time to any given situation, per the rest of verse seven. No human mandate can override this God-given commission.

  1. Pray for Christian parents around the world to love God with all of their hearts and to have His words in their hearts.
  2. Pray for Christian parents to wisely and intentionally whet His words on the lives of their children.
  3. Pray for these children to themselves become / remain wholehearted followers of their God, who will pass His words on to their children.
