Sunday Songs Series: “Cleanse Me”

Psalm 139:23-24

Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties;
and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Ezekiel 14:1-6 describes a situation where some leaders came to inquire of the Lord, but they had set up idols in their hearts. It was a travesty to pretend to seek God’s leadership when their hearts’ affections did not bend the knee to Him. God’s answer included the admonition for them to repent.

Unfortunately, this reality is occurring today in our country. Some people openly spurn God. Others give Him a token acknowledgment (whether for sentimental, superstitious, or pragmatic reasons), but their hearts belong to the things of this world. Even we as Christians can slip into similar habits from time to time.

Today’s hymn is a clarion call to be honest with God, to ask Him to show us what in our hearts needs to be changed. It is a prayer copied from David’s words in Psalm 139. The link below does not contain the fourth verse, but those lyrics are written out above today’s prayer requests. If we are ever to see true, widespread revival again in our nation, it must begin with repentance in the church, and then it will spread to regeneration of the lost.

Fourth verse lyrics:

O Holy Ghost,
Revival comes from Thee;
Send a revival,
Start the work in me.
Thy Word declares
Thou wilt supply our need;
For blessings now,
O Lord, I humbly plead.

  1. Pray for Christians to be honest with God today.
  2. Pray that the lost who give a token acknowledgement to God will really see their need to genuinely believe the gospel.
  3. Pray for revival and regeneration to sweep across our land.

Ezekiel 14:6
